It is extremely common to feel unsettled and shaken up after witnessing or experiencing a traumatic event. This is called post-traumatic stress and it is normal during and immediately following the event but generally dissipates over time. However, sometimes symptoms linger and begin to make it challenging for life to move forward after such an experience. If you are experiencing the following, it may be a sign of trauma or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD):
Treatment for Trauma & PTSD
It is imperative that a therapeutic relationship and environment of safety are established to ensure trauma can be processed appropriately. The client will first learn to establish coping mechanisms to deal with specific symptoms of trauma that arise. The therapist will hold space for the sharing of difficult experiences and emotions, help identify triggers that cause specific unhealthy reactions, and empower the client to develop and reprocess the trauma into a healthier more integrative narrative so that the event no longer holds power over their interactions with the world.
Virtual Trauma & PTSD Therapy
Virtual Trauma & PTSD Therapy works extremely well as hypervigilance (checking for safety cues) in unfamiliar places is a common symptom of trauma and PTSD often causing avoidance of doing the work that will allow the client to heal in the first place. Virtual therapy allows the client to engage in therapeutic work from a comfortable and familiar space in which they already feel a sense of safety. This allows the client the ability to focus on the session rather than external stimuli that may feel threatening.
